Tips for
Hiring an Arboriculturalist
Our family business, in continuous operation for over two
decades, focuses upon the most valuable component of the
landscape. A single tree of the right species and in the
right location that has been nurtured properly may exceed
the combined value of the remainder of the landscape.
However, trees are placed at a rather low priority within
the media. Much more time is devoted in regularly
scheduled broadcasts to seasonal color! This dearth of
information leaves the consumer exposed and vulnerable to
a plethora of ill informed, uneducated tree butchers,
some of which appear to the uninformed to be
professional.
-
- Far too many consumers are defrauded with fake
insurance certificates, over pruning, improper pruning,
unsafe work practices, and blatant (to those with a
formal education in the field) lies. As a consultant I
have often been retained by clients to evaluate their
tree population and almost as often detailed horrendously
poor service by a supposedly professional service. What
is surprising is that the consumer is most often totally
ignorant of the fact that they were victims.
-
- It is time that the consumer had some solid, factual
information about how to define the tree work they need
and then how to pick a competent service from a confusing
mix of professionals and con artists. With absolutely no
regulation by city or state government, we in the
industry who are dedicated to the highest standards need
to stand up and share the facts. Though we at ASI have
been prime educators of our clients, the general public,
and our competitors (we have offered free safety training
to any competitor for twenty years!), it is time that we
took a more aggressive stance.
